Getting Control of Energy Costs

I am a traveling salesman that calls on plastics manufacturing facilities
throughout the Southeastern US. I have been doing this for over twenty
years and I meet with business owners, plant managers, plant engineers,
operators, maintenance people and sometimes the occasional financial "suit".

In the past ten years, the competitive markets have become even more
challenging, and the company that is able to offer the best combination of
price, quality, and responsiveness is the one that wins.

Ever heard the old sales pitch: "Quality, Price, Delivery... Pick any Two"!

Today's customers want all three and the only way to do so is by getting
control of every facet of your manufacturing costs. In the type of business
I am in, raw materials is responsible for about 70% of the total cost of
production, energy is about 10%, labor about 8% and machinery costs are also
about 8%., and it is only getting more and more important as prices go up and supply
remains tight. Even with a sane electricity policy (of course we need to
build up our renewable energy farms and use more nuclear power, wake up
people...)

Here in the Southeast, we have relatively low electricity costs, often under
6 cents per kwh and it is still a concern. I can't even imagine how they
deal with it in expensive states like California or Hawaii.

I think that the future for energy consultants that have a broad view of the
options available, and who also have the resources to plan and implement
energy-savings programs at the corporate level, is very bright indeed. I
consider it my responsibility to help my customers to succeed in making
American manufacturing a viable and profitable enterprise.

I have spoken with Matt Shields on a number of occasions and I look forward
